Steven Moffat’s Douglas Is Cancelled release date confirmed on ITV

ITV has given a premiere date to former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat’s new series, Douglas Is Cancelled.

The channel has confirmed that the four-part series will begin on Thursday 27 June at 9pm on ITV and will, of course, also be available to stream on ITVX.

The series stars Who’s former girlfriend and Guardians of the Galaxy actress Karen Gillan, as well as Hugh Bonneville, who starred alongside Gillan in an episode of Who but is better known for things like W1A (which appears to be returning) and Downton Abbey (which is officially returning).

Bonneville leads the show as Douglas, the anchor of the newscast and a national treasure, while Gillan plays his co-host Madeline. The series follows what happens when a tweet accuses Douglas of making “an extremely sexist joke at a wedding,” and he is told that things have escalated to “nuclear bombs” because of his co-host’s actions.

What did Madeline do and what will happen once Douglas is “canceled”? You have just over two weeks left before we start to find out.

Beyond the two leads, the cast includes another former Gillan-era actor, Alex Kingston, as well as Ted Lasso and Taskmaster favourite Nick Mohammed, The Crown actor Ben Miles and The Death of Stalin’s Simon Russell Beale.

After handing over the keys to the TARDIS in late 2017, Moffat returned to the newly dubbed Whoniverse to write the third episode of the current season, “Boom”, which impressed both critics and fans.

He also wrote this year’s Christmas special, “Joy to the World,” but recently admitted he wasn’t sure it would serve as his swan song.

“It’s entirely possible that I won’t write for Doctor Who anymore,” he said. “I don’t know. I mean, after Christmas, I’m not lying. I’m not involved in season two. My contribution, really, is the Christmas special.

“I’ve got a lot to do, so I may never write Doctor Who again. What makes me a little sad is that even if I do another one, I probably won’t know when I’ve done the last one.”

Douglas Is Cancelled starts at 9pm on Thursday 27 June on ITV and ITVX.
