After a long silence on the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally spoke out in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Modi said his government was doing everything possible to bring the situation back to normal in the violence-hit state. He further asserted that violence was on a steady decline and schools had reopened in most parts of the state, and efforts were being made to ensure complete peace.

We are trying our best to bring peace to Manipur, Modi said, asking everyone to show cooperation.

More than 500 people have been arrested, over 11,000 FIRs have been lodged, situation is returning to normal in most parts of Manipur, he said.

Modi also said that Manipur was also facing a flood situation and the Centre had rushed two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to the state.

Modi also attacked the opposition for “taking advantage” of the incidents in Manipur.

“Stop politicising the Manipur issue, one day Manipur will reject you,” Modi said, referring to the Congress.

The Congress responded to Modi’s remarks by saying the prime minister was making astonishing statements regarding the situation in Manipur.

“Today in the Rajya Sabha, after months of absolute silence on the issue, the non-biological Prime Minister has stunningly stated that the situation in Manipur is normal. In reality, the situation is still tense, as pointed out by the MP from Manipur Interior in the Lok Sabha on July 1,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said.

“And the non-biological Pradhan Mantri has still not visited Manipur since its eruption on the night of May 3, 2023 – nor has it met the state’s political leaders. The President’s speech was also silent on the issue,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Congress criticised the government for refusing its second MP from Manipur to speak ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s speech in the Lok Sabha.

The Congress said the chief minister repeated his old allegations, cracked jokes and accepted taunts but did not have the patience to listen to the voice of the violence-hit state legislator.

The opposition party also alleged that the prime minister appeared to be deliberately “turning his back” on the plight of Manipur.

Opposition parties today tried to interrupt the Prime Minister’s speech in the Rajya Sabha by chanting “Rajya Sabha ko radh karo, Jhooth bolna band karo (Adjourn Rajya Sabha, stop lying). They also staged a walkout amid PM Modi’s reply to the motion of thanks to the President’s speech.

Responding to the opposition’s strike, the Prime Minister said that the opposition has been defeated and is now screaming and running away. He also added, “The opposition is not in a position to digest the mandate given by 140 million people to the NDA.” The Rajya Sabha Chairman also criticised the opposition parties for staging a strike during the Prime Minister’s speech.

In his speech, the Prime Minister lashed out at the opposition on issues of women’s safety and Dalit rights. He criticised the opposition for not mentioning the public flogging of a woman in West Bengal and the Sandeshkhali incidents.

Speaking about the irregularities in the NEET exam, the Prime Minister said, “I assure the youth that the government will not spare those who play with their future.”

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister addressed the Lok Sabha. During his speech, he attacked the INDIA bloc and Rahul Gandhi over the opposition leader’s recent statements on Hinduism and other issues.
