Joe Alwyn Breaks Silence on Taylor Swift Breakup and Its ‘Abnormal’ Aftermath

Joe Alwyn spoke for the first time about his separation from Taylor Swift.

The Conversations With Friends star and the Grammy-winning singer were together for around six years, before it was first reported that they were splitting in 2023.

A year after their split, the Times asked Joe if he had listened to Taylor’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, which is said to have been inspired by the British actor, as are some of the songs.

Joe declined to give a “direct answer” to the question, but said: “I hope everyone can relate and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, committed relationship of over six and a half years. It is a difficult ordeal to overcome.

“What is unusual and abnormal about this situation is that a week later it is suddenly made public and the outside world can intervene.”

He also noted that a public breakup means that “something very real” is “suddenly thrown into a very unreal space” that includes “the tabloids, social media, the press, where it is then dissected, speculated upon, distorted beyond recognition.”

“The truth is there will always be a gap between what we know and what we say,” he said. “I’ve accepted that.”

While tracks like So Long London are widely considered to be about Joe, fans were surprised when The Tortured Poets Department was released earlier this year to discover that the bulk of the album appears to be about Matty Healywho Taylor dated shortly after her breakup.

After splitting from Matty, she started dating the NFL star Travis Kelcewith whom she has been in a relationship for almost a year.
