NCIS Hawaii fans rejoice: 9 cancelled shows that are coming back

Despite a huge fanbase, NCIS Hawaii was canceled in April 2024 after three seasons. While most of the time, when a show is canceled, it means that production has ended despite protests from its fans, many shows have found new life, especially when fans campaign for them to come back. From period dramas to comedies, here are the shows that have returned after being canceled…

Community Returns for a Movie

The show is set in a community college where absurd situations follow one after the other. Fans loved the series and the friendships of the study group: Jeff, Annie, Abed, Troy, Britta, Shirley, and Pierce. After some problems with the series, including replacing showrunner Dan Harmon in season 4 and bringing him back in season 5, NBC decided to cancel the comedy before season 6. However, the series got a new lease on life when Yahoo! Screen revived it to finish its six-season run.

Not only were fans treated to a slew of new episodes, but it was also confirmed that Peacock will be releasing a feature-length movie starring nearly all of the original cast, including Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. As Abed Nadir would say, “Six seasons and a movie!”

Given its enduring popularity and the affection fans have for this ragtag group of cops and their antics at Precinct 99, it’s truly surprising that the show was canceled by Fox after just five seasons. NBC came to the rescue and the show enjoyed three more seasons until its finale in 2021.

The sci-fi series, which follows a group who discover they have become intrinsically linked and able to access each other’s emotions and abilities, had an extremely passionate fanbase and was something of a cult hit.

However, largely due to the massive budget required to film across the globe, the series was canceled early by Netflix after just two seasons, with fans starting online petitions to try to reverse the unpopular decision. While we never got another season, series creator Lana Wachowski confirmed that they had the green light to make a two-hour special that would wrap up everything and give fans a satisfying ending.

The sci-fi western series, which was canceled before its initial run on Fox, gained popularity through word of mouth and eventually won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Special Visual Effects. Following the series’ subsequent success, creator Joss Whedon was able to produce a film adaptation, Serenitywhich allowed the final details of the show to be wrapped up.

ITV historical drama Sanditonbased on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, may have been a hit with fans, but the ratings simply weren’t high enough for the British network to decide to revive it for a second season. However, fans of the series rallied to the cause and brought the series back for two more years with the help of Masterpiece (PBS) in the United States.

The series has been confirmed to have reached its conclusion, with writer Justin Young telling Digital Spy: “Let me stress that[season 4]will never happen. Throughout the process, there were a lot of notes for a long time about making sure we leave certain threads open and making sure we don’t close everything for season 4.

“After we finished writing Season 3, we were like, ‘No, it’s over.’ We were done. And I’m glad we did.”

Netflix came to the rescue once again when NBC canceled this supernatural mystery drama following a group of passengers who disappear for years after boarding a plane and return with no time having passed.

The series, which initially ended after three seasons, immediately became a huge hit on the streaming platform and returned for a fourth and final season in 2022-2023, which just goes to show that sometimes a series has to be on the right platform to make a splash!

Remember when Netflix would just save shows instead of canceling them? Well, none were as celebrated as when the streaming giant picked up the beloved series Lucifer after Fox canceled it after the third season in 2018.

The series follows Lucifer, a fallen angel who leaves Hell for a vacation in Los Angeles, where he solves crimes with a detective. A massive campaign with the hashtag “#SaveLucifer” was launched, as well as an online petition. In a nod to the campaign that led to Netflix saving the day, a season 4 episode was titled “Save Lucifer.”
