WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that would automatically translate messages in chats. According to a report by WABetaInfo, Meta’s instant messaging platform is testing a new feature that will allow users to decide whether the app should automatically translate all future conversations into a preferred language. The feature is reportedly available for testing among select WhatsApp for Android users in the latest beta version.

The report states that in a future version of the app, users will be able to translate a selected WhatsApp message into the language of their choice. Additionally, the app will also allow them to automate this process for all new messages. Once the user selects their preferred language, WhatsApp will prompt them to download a language pack.

Once translated, messages will have a “Translated” badge in the chat bubble to indicate that this specific message has been translated from another language. This will help the user distinguish between original messages and translated messages, reducing the risk of misunderstanding.

According to the report, WhatsApp will initially support only a limited number of languages, including English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. WhatsApp is also expected to use its own technology for this feature, translating messages on the device to ensure user privacy.

It was previously reported that WhatsApp is exploring ways to offer a Google Pixel-like voice transcription feature for voice messages. According to press reports, WhatsApp is currently testing this feature that offers text transcription for incoming and outgoing audio notes. As with the likely message translation feature, users will need to download a language pack if they want to transcribe voice messages into a preferred language. Additionally, this feature would likely use on-device processing as well.
