Joe Manchin Considers Challenging Kamala Harris

CNN reports that sources close to the senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) says lawmakers plan to return to Democratic Party to seek party nomination, despite president Joe Biden Vice President of Support Kamala Harris.

ABC News also reported that after Biden’s announcement, Manchin reached out to the former Democratic National Committee chairwoman. Donna Brazile to “inquire about the news.” Two sources also told the outlet that Manchin was considering returning to the party to challenge Harris.

Earlier Sunday, Manchin called on Biden to step down, saying it was time for him to “pass the torch.” Biden announced his withdrawal from the race against the Republican Donald Trump shortly after.

“I hope that happens, because I think it will leave him with a tremendous legacy as one of the greatest leaders we’ve ever had,” CNN anchor Manchin said. Jake Tapper on State of the Union“I say this, and it is with a heavy heart that I have made the decision that I think it is time to pass the torch to a new generation.”

After making the announcement, Biden praised and endorsed Harris as his successor to the Democratic Party presidency. Additionally, Harris took control of the Biden campaign’s $96 million war chest after officially launching her presidential bid.

Before the reshuffle, CNN Manu Raju asked Manchin if he was about to run for the Oval Office.

At that time, Mancin told him: “I have never let a political opportunity pass, you never let a political opportunity pass and you leave, so you always have options, because life is full of surprises. But I have no intention of running for political office.”

Last May, Manchin, 76, announced he was leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an independent. Last year, Manchin said he would not seek re-election to the Senate, opening up a potential seat for Republicans hoping to turn the tide in the Senate.

However, several media outlets are now reporting that Manchin has reconsidered his decision and is actively exploring the possibility of running after all.

A Harris ally told CNN they do not view Manchin as a “serious threat” if he runs for president.
