Graeme McDowell suspended by LIV Golf for anti-doping rule violation

Graeme McDowell has been suspended by LIV Golf for one tournament for violating the tour’s anti-doping policy.

The Saudi-funded series said, external The 45-year-old man used “a decongestant medication that contained a banned substance.”

The Northern Irishman’s offence occurred at LIV Golf Nashville in June and he was also fined $125,000 (£98,000).

“Before LIV Nashville, I was suffering from severe congestion that was affecting my sleep,” said McDowell, who won the U.S. Open in 2010.

“To try to manage this, I used a generic nasal decongestant without realizing that it might be on the banned list.

“As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the possibility of applying for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

“Unfortunately, I did not think to do so due to the over-the-counter nature of this medication and I deeply regret this oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.”

McDowell and his LIV Nashville team’s results will be disqualified following his suspension.

He will miss the next event in the series, which begins in West Virginia on Aug. 16, and will be eligible to return for the Chicago tournament in September.

“I’m proud of my 22-year career and how I’ve conducted myself throughout it,” McDowell added.

“Now I’m focused on my future and getting back on the golf course. I can’t wait to see everyone at LIV Chicago.”
