GOP’s anti-crime measures aimed at restoring safety to black communities have failed, Georgia attorney general says

CHICAGO – Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has a simple solution for blue cities fed up with violence and thieves: enforce the law, lock up criminals, and protect American citizens and their businesses from crime.

“Elections have consequences,” he told Fox News Digital, calling Vice President Harris the “patron saint of left-wing prosecutors” while criticizing progressive crime policies that have failed the communities they purport to benefit.

“She was for defunding the police, sanctuary cities and cashless bail,” he said.

Harris, a former California attorney general who has highlighted her prosecutorial background on the campaign trail, has also publicly supported bail funds that help defendants get out of jail while they are being held on bond. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“All the prosecutors that we’ve seen across the country, from Los Angeles to San Francisco, where she was a prosecutor, to St. Louis and even in our state in Athens and even in Atlanta, Georgia…she’s the model of what they really aspired to,” Carr told Fox News Digital. “And that’s the new criminal justice reform, which is not enforcing the law.”

He added that recent years of policies have provided “a road map to increased crime.”

In Athens, a college town known for the University of Georgia and its football team, left-wing politics caused a nightmare earlier this year when a violent illegal immigrant was accused of kidnapping and murdering nursing student Laken Riley as she jogged in a campus park. Angry residents lambasted local officials for adopting “sanctuary” policies at a news conference after her death.

“Look at the communities that are most often impacted by this violent crime,” he told Fox News Digital. “These are the communities that Democrats and leftists claim to want to protect, but in reality, it’s conservatives and Republicans who are doing everything they can to keep people safe. I think that’s critically important.”“

Chicago, the host city of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, has a population three times smaller than New York City but surpasses it in homicides, according to police statistics.

“Either you go down a path of ignoring the law, avoiding the law and increasing crime, or you enforce the law,” he said. “And that’s exactly what’s happening.”

It’s a measure that police organizations have been calling for for years: to roll back bail reforms that put repeat offenders back on the streets almost immediately so they can reoffend. That lack of consequences, combined with the reluctance of left-wing prosecutors to charge suspects to the fullest extent of the law, has dented police morale across the country, leading cities to struggle to recruit and retain staff.

Former Chicago Police Chief Gene Roy told Fox News Digital this week that the city’s police force has thousands of vacancies.

Democratic elites have been criticized for their total indifference to the reality of crime in Chicago, as they hold their convention just blocks from where a 7-year-old boy, Jai’Mani Rivera, was shot and killed earlier this year. The suspect could have been behind bars, but he was released on home confinement, which he reportedly ignored.

Even understaffed, Chicago police deftly handled anti-Israel protests outside the country’s consulate in Chicago on Tuesday night, gently corralling unruly demonstrators until, after warning them to disperse, they made about 70 arrests when the protesters refused to go home.

Chicago has always been one of the great cities in the country, Carr said. But in recent years, as an “incubator for these left-wing politics,” the city has been plagued by gun violence, robberies, carjackings and population loss.

“I find it absolutely ironic that the Democrats went to Chicago, where they continue to elect people who don’t believe in the rule of law, who don’t believe in law enforcement — but also some of the security measures they’ve taken to put up walls around the convention center,” he said. “When the border is not secure, they’ve refused to have any discussion about walls or more security on our southern border.”

Carr is also a supporter of the Protecting Americans Action Fund, which was created to counter the financial support that left-wing donors like billionaire George Soros have given to progressive prosecutor campaigns across the country, resulting in prosecutors’ offices led by George Gascon of Los Angeles, Alvin Bragg of Manhattan and Kim Foxx of Chicago.
