The Galveston city marshal was driving home when he spotted a man suspected of killing a Harris County deputy constable.

GALVESTON, Texas – As KPRC 2 continues to learn more about the murder of Harris County’s 4th Precinct deputy constable, we’re learning more about how his alleged killer was apprehended.

Sergeant Nicholas Yeley of the Galveston City Marshals explained how the arrest unfolded in an interview with KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel, first noting how descriptive the shooter’s vehicle was. From there, it was all hands on deck.

“They were very descriptive, which made it easier for us to be observant and vigilant,” he said. “We were all observant. We were all on the lookout. We wanted to find this person.”

Despite the long wait, Sergeant Yeley said things looked bleak and his shift was about to end.

“And all day long we were watching and nothing,” he said. “I clocked in and got ready to go home, jumped in my personal car … and was driving home talking to my dad.”

That’s when things took an unexpected turn and the sergeant had to interrupt that phone call with his father.

“I happened to look over and said, ‘Oh, Dad, I gotta go. I’ll call you back.’ And the suspect’s car was in a parking lot. He was pulling into the parking lot and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” Sergeant Yeley said. “It was planned for me to find him and call the troops.”

Because he was not in uniform, he was able to react quickly and call Galveston police to intervene and apprehend the suspect. When the suspect realized he had been spotted, he fled in his vehicle, leading authorities into a brief chase.

While in the Causeway Bridge area, the suspect drove his vehicle into the water. He was seen on Houston Transtar cameras swimming in the water before law enforcement arrived by boat to retrieve him.

However, within minutes, officers were able to apprehend the shooter, which completely caught Sergeant Yeley off guard, given the amount of time he had spent waiting and monitoring the shooter.

“It took a lot of heroes to do what they did,” he said. “And they need recognition. I was right there in the right place to put them in their place. It’s a phenomenal feeling, don’t get me wrong, but it’s those heroes who got it.”

Although Sergeant Yeley did not know Deputy Constable Husseini directly, they shared a family connection through law enforcement.

“We’re all brothers and sisters,” he said. “We’re a big community, but we love each other. And he’s like an extended family to all of us. That’s it. It hurts. We’re all here, grieving with this family.”
