Latest US elections: Daughter of late Republican president endorses Harris | US News

As Kamala Harris shared the stage with Republican Liz Cheney, news broke that she has received another endorsement — and, again, it’s from someone you’d normally expect to oppose the Democratic Party.

Susan Ford Bales, daughter of the late Republican President Gerald Ford, endorsed Harris on Monday.

In a statement, she said that when her father took office following the resignation of former President Richard Nixon, “the nation needed a serious, compassionate and honorable leader” who would have “the courage to do what is right and always defend our Constitution”.

His statement continued: “We face similar dynamics today. America cannot return to a divisive paradigm of mutual hatred and disdain for our Constitution.

“We witnessed on January 6th the horrors of what appears to be and we can never allow this tragedy to happen again. The forces that incited it must be held accountable. They can never be in a position to do so again.

“Vice President Harris and I probably disagree on some policy issues, but her integrity and commitment to the same principles that guided my father led me to conclude that Kamala Harris should be elected the 47th president of the United States.”

Like Liz Cheney, daughter of George W Bush’s former vice president Dick Cheney, Susan Ford Bales is an important Republican Party establishment supporter of Harris.

But Donald Trump has built his support despite opposition from many traditional conservatives since his 2016 US election victory.

He has previously called his critics in the Republican Party RINOs — meaning Republicans in Name Only.
