Delhi rains: IndiGo, SpiceJet cancel flights from Terminal 1 as airport roof collapses

Delhi residents woke up to sweltering heat on Friday. But the heat brought bad news for passengers leaving the city today. A portion of the roof of Delhi airport collapsed, leading to the temporary suspension of all outgoing flights.

IndiGo took to social media to announce that all of the airline’s flights to and from Terminal 1 have been canceled.

“IndiGo’s flight operations are impacted due to structural damage at Terminal 1 of Delhi airport due to adverse weather conditions. This has led to flight cancellations in Delhi as passengers are unable to enter the terminal. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their scheduled flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives,” the carrier said in a statement.

“This unforeseen situation has also impacted the operations of the entire network. Customers are advised to track and confirm the status of their flight before leaving for the airport,” she said, while providing two contact numbers for passengers to seek assistance: 0124 6173838 or 0124 4973838.

Budget airline SpiceJet also announced the cancellation of its flights from Terminal 1. “Due to bad weather (heavy rain), SpiceJet flights have been canceled as Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport will remain partially closed for operations until further notice We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Air India said that due to heavy rains, flight delays are likely and urged passengers to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.

This comes after the airport reported the roof collapsing in the early hours of Friday. Check-in counters have been temporarily suspended as a safety precaution. “Due to heavy rain since early this morning, part of the canopy of the old departures forecourt of Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport collapsed around 5 a.m. Injuries were reported and the emergency personnel are endeavoring to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to these affected people,” a Delhi International Airport (DIAL) spokesperson said in a statement. Terminal 1, out of the three terminals of Delhi Airport, operates only domestic flights.
