Gold Star’s mother ‘disgusted, but not shocked’ by Biden’s claim no soldiers died on his watch: ‘He’s gone’

Kelly Barnett, a Gold Star mother whose son, Staff Sergeant Darin Taylor Hoover, was among 13 U.S. service members killed during the failed withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, said she was “disgusted” but “not shocked” by President Biden’s stunning denial during last week’s presidential debate.

Biden falsely claimed on stage that he was the “only president in this century, in this decade, who has no soldiers dying anywhere in the world,” ignoring the 13 fallen service members who were killed during his administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.

Master Sergeant Darin Taylor Hoover was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

During an appearance on “America Reports” Monday, Barnett said that while she and other Gold Star families were deeply hurt by the president’s omission, she believed Biden was “set up” and instructed to make the offensive remark.

“I wasn’t shocked. I was angry,” she told host Sandra Smith. “I believe in my soul that President Biden is gone. He doesn’t remember what he had for breakfast. I think he was told to say that. They want him gone. I think it was a set-up, and… yet he’s gone and as much as I feel sorry for him, it’s still disgusting.”

Barnett’s son, Staff Sergeant Darin Taylor Hoover, was engaged to be married when he was killed at age 31 during his third tour in Afghanistan.

Since his son’s death, President Biden has not contacted the family, except for a formal letter sent by the White House several months after his death, Barnett said.

“We haven’t heard back. Seven families have formed a coalition and have been begging. We’ve sent letters and emails asking them to talk to us. We want to talk to you. It’s been denied and we’ve received no response,” she told Smith.

President Biden was seen at last week’s presidential debate, where he insisted that he was “the only president in this century, in this decade, who doesn’t have soldiers dying anywhere in the world.”

Barnett said she wasn’t shocked by Biden’s false claim about the debate because it’s consistent with “the way we’ve been treated this whole time.”

Gold Star’s mother revealed that former President Trump contacted her family immediately after her son’s death and invited them to speak with him in a face-to-face meeting at Mar-a-Lago, where she recalled spending “four wonderful hours” honoring her late son alongside the former president.

“He cares about my son, he cares about our military,” she said.

Still, Barnett said she hopes President Biden will stay in the presidential race so he is held accountable for his decisions.

“He has to stay in office. I don’t think they’re going to let him in one way or another, but he has to stay in office and he has to be held accountable. The entire Biden administration has to be held accountable,” she said. “And I just hope that they go ahead and let him stay in office and let Trump go through without any problems.”

“The entire Biden administration knows what they have done wrong and what they continue to do to our families. Again, it is disgusting,” she added later.

Although she has not formally met the president, Barnett said her daughter once exchanged a few words with Biden during the dignified transfer ceremony for Hoover and other U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan, after seeing him repeatedly check his watch during the solemn event.

“I saw him look at his watch three times. I finally told my daughter, because she was so upset, ‘Don’t look at him anymore. Stop looking at him,’” Barnett recalled. “She got more and more frustrated. And finally, the last soldier came out, and they left. Biden was there, and she yelled at him.”

“She couldn’t hold it in anymore. She meant every word she said to him, but it shows how frustrated she was. There are no words to explain how much we’ve been slighted, how much we feel slighted. And I think it was the only thing she could do to make herself feel better.”
