The Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago (Dominican Republic) greets all Haitian compatriots living in the Dominican Republic, particularly those in the Cibao region, the Consulate takes the opportunity to inform the community that it will close its doors today Tuesday at noon (12 p.m.) due to the category 5 hurricane Beryl hitting the island, which can bring strong winds and cause flooding.

The Consulate is asking the community to be vigilant during the hurricane, especially those living in high-risk areas, while protecting important documents such as passports, birth certificates, Dermalog cards, etc.

Report 11am:

As of 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, the center of Hurricane Beryl was located at 15.3 degrees north latitude and 68.9 degrees west longitude, 227 miles (365 km) south of the Dominican Republic and 270 miles (433 km) southeast of Haiti. Beryl is moving toward the west-northwest at about 22 mph (35 km/h) and this general movement is expected to continue through Wednesday, followed by a more westerly turn on Thursday. The center of Beryl is forecast to move rapidly across the central Caribbean Sea today and pass near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday. The center is expected to approach the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on Thursday evening.

Reports from the Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate maximum sustained winds are near 160 mph (260 km/h) with higher gusts. Beryl is a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Weakening is expected later in the day, but Beryl is still expected to be near major hurricane intensity as it moves toward the central Caribbean and passes near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday. Additional weakening is expected afterward, although Beryl is expected to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean.

Hurricane-force winds extend up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 175 miles (280 km).

– A hurricane watch is currently in effect for the southern coast of Haiti, from the border with the Dominican Republic to Anse d’Hainault.

– A tropical storm warning is in effect for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, from Punta Palenque westward to the border with Haiti.

– Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area along the southern coast of Hispaniola later today.

– Storm surge could raise water levels up to 30 to 90 cm above ground level in onshore wind areas along the southern coast of Hispaniola.

– Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) with localized maximums of 12 inches (30 cm) over Jamaica and southwestern Haiti through late Wednesday. Beryl will also produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 cm) with isolated amounts of 10 inches (25 cm) over the Barahona Peninsula in the southwest Dominican Republic. Isolated totals of 6 inches (15 cm) or more are also expected over the mountainous terrain of the central Dominican Republic. This rainfall has the potential to cause flash flooding and mudslides.
