Dead Boy Detectives Canceled by Netflix After One Season

Dead Boy Detectives was canceled by Netflix after only one season.

The series follows deceased friends Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) and Edwin Paine (George Rexstrew) who decide they would rather solve supernatural crimes on Earth than go to the afterlife.

The cast also includes Hollyoaks’ Kassius Nelson, Yuyu Kitamura, The Summer I Turned Pretty’s David Iacono, Jenn Lyon, Lukas Gage, You star Briana Cuoco and Supernatural’s Ruth Connell.

Released last April, Dead Boy Detectives remained in Netflix’s top 10 English series for three weeks. However, according to Variety, the Neil Gaiman adaptation will not return for season 2.

The series’ cancellation is particularly disappointing after its arduous journey to reach the screen. Max had originally ordered a pilot in 2021, which was followed by a series order the following year.

“It’s a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief and death through the lens of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two deceased British teenagers, and their very much alive friend, Crystal Palace. So it’s a lot like a vintage detective series, but darker and on acid,” reads the original synopsis.

The series was based on characters created for DC by Gaiman and Matt Wagner, and it was later decided that Dead Boy Detectives would not fit into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Max-DC content.

This decision led to Netflix acquiring the series in 2023. Given that the Dead Boy Detectives were first introduced in The Sandman comic book and Netflix is ​​currently airing its television adaptation, the series fits perfectly into the Sandman universe.

Although Dead Boy Detectives has been scrapped, The Sandman will be returning for season 2, after it was announced that Steve Coogan has joined the cast.

Dead Boy Detectives is now available on Netflix. Season 1 of The Sandman is available to stream on Netflix, while season 2 has yet to receive a release date.
