Brian Ortega Reveals the Story Behind His Iconic UFC Walkout Inspired by ‘The Purge’

UFC featherweight contender Brian Ortega has revealed the disturbing story behind his iconic UFC 266 walkout, inspired by the film “The Purge.”

Brian Ortega fought for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 266 in 2021, facing then-champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Although ‘T-City’ was defeated by ‘The Great’, his walk to the cage will always be remembered as one of the greatest of all time, as he and his team came out with inspired masks from the movie “The Purge”.

Brian Ortega reveals the dark story behind his iconic strike

Ahead of his short notice fight in the UFC 303 co-main event against Diego Lopes next Saturday, the 33-year-old revealed the story behind his iconic walkout, and it’s pretty disturbing.

“At the time, I was living in an apartment, I had moved out of my house when I split up (with my former partner), and there was this neighbor upstairs who, every hour, it was like 2 to 4 in the morning and I was like, ‘Man, you’re not sleeping, what’s going on?’ Ortega began to explain himself during the UFC 303 media day.

“I was watching some reels (on Instagram) or something and the song ‘The Purge’ came on, and I started fantasizing, it’s not the best thing, but if ‘The Purge’ was real, The first thing I do is go upstairs,” Ortega ominously admitted.

The 33-year-old then explained how disruptions during the fight camp for what was the most important fight of his career so far led him to come up with a last-minute plan for his walkout.

“I feel like they’re dragging something on the floor all night, like if you need help let me know, and after I complain (to the owner) I swear ‘They would double down, so it was just in my head, like man, if “The Purge” was real, I would go upstairs and just take care of business.

“Then I thought, man, what if I headed for that, wouldn’t that be great?” There are no logos on this (mask), it cost $5, the cheapest walkout ever and the soundtrack was awesome and I disturbed all of you in the crowd,” Ortega continued.

Ortega’s original plan was scarier, but the UFC didn’t approve it

“T-City” also admitted that the original plan was for the walkout to be more “scary” and give a true “The Purge” feel, but the UFC couldn’t approve his original plans because it this had to be known. it was just a walkout.

“Imagine if they turned everything off, at least the song I originally had was a little scarier, it seemed a little more real, so I was hoping that I would scare everybody in the crowd a little bit, like, ‘Wait.’ What’s going on? Did they really allow this, what’s going on, why is the UFC doing this?

“But the UFC didn’t accept my plan, they had to get to where you have to know that it’s just a walkout, people shouldn’t panic,” Ortega added.

The 33-year-old is preparing for what will likely be a tough weight cut to 145 pounds for UFC 303 next Saturday, as he prepared to move up to lightweight for a fight at UFC 306.

Despite this, he looks to stop featherweight contender Lopes’ momentum in what could be his last featherweight fight for some time.
