NEC: Tinubu, state governors remain silent on minimum wage – OsunDefender

Nigerians are yet to know whether President Bola Tinubu and governors of the 36 states of the federation discussed the issue of minimum wage at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting yesterday.

The federal and state governments remained silent on the minimum wage issue after the meeting, leaving millions of Nigerians and union members in doubt.

It would be recalled that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Tuesday said that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had withdrawn the memo regarding the new minimum wage for workers in the country.

Idris noted that this was necessary to enable the President to consult more with other stakeholders on this issue as it involves local governments, states, the federal government and the organized private sector.

Furthermore, President Tinubu yesterday attended the NEC meeting, statutorily chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, a development that has raised hopes among keen observers of the developments that the threshold for the expected new minimum wage will be pushed back.

But after the NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, there was no mention of the minimum wage as the governors who briefed the press did not respond to questions.
